side-b

enrichment for creative people

Being in process is transient. It’s a radical act of presence, endurance, and inquisitiveness. As we experience busy minds and bodies, process can be a refuge to feel more enriched, inspired, and connected to every day.

Side-b is a pay-what-you-want digital and print publication and exploratory creative production. Like flipping through the pages of a magazine or leisurely perusing the Sunday newspaper, Side-b returns to the nostalgia of slowing down and being intimate with physical inspiration. This publication makes stops at writing entries, curated playlists, gathered inspiration, and project development.

faq

  • As I embark on my first iteration of this project, I invite you to “pay what you want” to support this body of work. You can choose $27, $48, $60, $96, $120, $156, $240, or enter your price. Payment will not recur, though you can elect to support my work at a price and interval that works best for you.

  • This project is entirely experimental. I have wanted to identify how to distribute the heart of my work for a long time now, and I am hopeful this becomes a beautiful container for that. “Pay what you want” enables me to take this leap without the pressure for it to be perfect. I am viewing it as a beta version. A chance to get feedback and evolve this project as needed.

  • Good question - and I don’t have a complete answer. I always aim to try things for at least 6 months before making any judgment on if it’s working. I see this first iteration going through the end of the year, with the long-term vision of moving to a yearly subscription model sometime in 2025.

  • The digital publication is like a curated mixtape—weekly, I’ll share a curation of thoughts, playlists, and inspiration holding me as I move through my process. I anticipate adding 1-3 entries per week, totaling about 4 to 8 updates per month. Entries will be a mix of words (>500 words or less), photos, videos, audio notes, and any other bits of ephemera informing my process. Entries will be gathered into a monthly newsletter and delivered to your inbox.

  • A zine is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via a copy machine. They are intended to be a highly accessible, low-barrier form of communication. Because of this, zines have provided me with an excellent way to publish my process—something fleeting.

The print publication will be like a newspaper. A warm invitation over Sunday breakfast to sit with written words and images sans a digital device. Twice a year, you’ll receive a newsprint folded into a journal containing my writing and photography. Much like my bi-weekly letters, zines will vary in topics centering on a concept, subject, theme, or idea I am exploring that season. The reverse side of the zine will feature a 12x18 film photography art print.

  • Zines will be available for purchase in the side-b shop in May and November and for distribution in North America only. A free digital copy will be published and available for all paying supporters.

  • Zines will be ~$25 + the cost of shipping.

  • I created Side-b as a source of enrichment and inspiration for creative people. If you are looking for 1:1 support, feedback, and guidance, artist mentorship is the place for you.
